Would like to get your wisdom on this, have already searched the archives
and found nothing to guide me!
Client called me. She is nursing a 7 month old baby and has 3 other
children. She has a 6 yo with CP (cerebral palsey). The girl is on
Pedias*re with fiber. She is exclusively fed via g-tube. The doctors say
that she has severe CP. Two weeks ago, a virus started being passed around
from family member to family member. The 6 yo caught it and began gagging
everytime she had the pedias*re. The girl has a nissian, so the gagging is
a problem since she will tear her stomach because she could not vomit.
Docs told mom to put the girl on pedialyte for a few days, then to
reintroduce the pedias*re watered down. The mom had some frozen EBM on
hand from pumping for the 7 month old. So she decided that if the
breastmilk would keep her 7 month old from getting sick, that maybe it
would help the 6 yo. The baby was the only one not to get horribly sick
from this virus! So, she gave the 6 yo the breastmilk, and for the first
time in 3 days she did not gag. She continued to give the breastmilk 6
times a day (between 4-8 oz. each time) When she had depleted her supply
of frozen she put the girl back on the pedias*re. Shortly after she was
given the first dose of this, she began gagging again. Mom is wondering
now, is it ok for her to continue to give the 6 yo EBM, if she does, how
much should she be getting, and is there any place to find info to support
the mom using the EBM, that she can present to her doctor? Should she be
doing anything to document what she is doing? Are there any concerns that
this mom should watch out for? Sorry if this seems strange or trivial, but
this mom is very concerned for her 6 yo. She has a very large milk supply,
even before pumping for the 6 yo. Hopefully one of you can help me!
Thanks! Also, please CC: me with any responses to this.
