Hello, you may recall that I posted recently on our hospital's efforts to
find a fast, easy way to heat breastmilk for our moms whose babies are in
the NICU. Our current method is a lab incubator which has temp ranges
considered out of JCAHO standards (so they tell me anyway). Sometimes our nurses will microwave water until it is hot and put the bottles in to
warm. Sometimes they make the water near boiling.

Does anyone know the safety of heating bottles in those baby bottle
warmers you find in the chain stores such as Target, Walmart, Kmart,
etc. Do the temp ranges go to high?

An LC friend of mine tells me that the new Human Milk Banking
recommendations for warming are you can use water if the temp is not
warmer than 37 degrees and the water does not touch the lid of the bottle.
There is concern in our NICU that this would take far too long to get the
milk warm for a very hungry baby who just can't wait. And how important is
it for the milk to be perfect at body temp anyway?

Since I am just starting in working with these little preemies, I would
>like your feedback on this. Thanks so much!
