I think as IBCLCs we want to not "over alarm" moms .... until we get a case
like this, and then we want to send every mother we see to the oncologist.
I had a dear friend die at age 36 after a four-year battle with cancer. The
very first symptom: breast refusal by her then-11-month-old.

It's all in how you present the info to the mom. Imagine how terrifying it
would be, to the mother of a toddler and a nursling, to have someone mention
"the C word." Be warm, be human: talk about how it is OK to fear the worst,
but not OK to avoid seeing a doc to rule it out. And be darn sure you have
a list of *good* breast surgeons, familiar with the lactating breast, to
refer this mother to.
