It was worse than I expected in some ways and yet I thought there were a
couple of positive signs.

I thought the good things were:

Grad's using an electric pump to get milk for her baby
The hospital does recommend breastfeeding
Grad suggests 'pump and dump' vs weaning to another Dr for Mom who is
having surgery and taking meds

Dr Grad is shown throughout as struggling to adjust to being a mother and
being a mother and a working woman. (I've wondered why they don't
have this mother jobshare with her husband - they are both er docs)

Bad:

Pumping is happening in bathroom stall, she is only using a single versus
a double attachment kit.

No one suggests checking the pain meds for surgery to see if they are
compatible

It is suggested that the hospital is forcing moms to breastfeed since the
hospital 'can't' send formula home with moms

All this anti mothers choice is suggested to be part of Baby Friendly
contract.

It is suggested Mothers must sign contract before they leave hospital

Cops are called first thing and it is suggested the baby's mother be
arrested for neglect.

The hospital LC talked to Mom on phone - did not see the baby - and
recommended Mom not supplement (Hope that LC has her malpractice
insurance up to date!)

Nothing is mentioned about Mother receiving BF ED pre or post natally.
No mention of Mom knowing when there is a problem.

Obviously no HCP on staff is knowledgeable about bf.

Do remember that 'sandwich' letters have better impact. Start off with a
positive and close with a positive.

Sounds like co-producer has issues herself. I know there was a quote
from Dr. Neifert around the time of the Wall Street Journal article (93
or 94) about the 5 %, but I've never seen any documentation. Is there
any?

Locally: the local (Corpus Christi) CBS affiliate showed
'nada'(nothing) about Chicago Hope or breastfeeding before or after the
show.

Sigh, guess we have more letters to write . . . .

Sincerely,

Katherine Catone, LLLL, IBCLC
