Dear lactnet friends-
I posted last week about a mom I'm working with whose dtr. developed
secretory diarrhea at 2 mos of age. While she is no longer acutely ill, she
continues to have blood and mucus in her stool. The mother has carefully
removed all diary (and related by-products) and soy from her diet, for
several weeks now, but the bloody stools remain. I thank you for the posts I
received in response.
The pediatrician managing her care is leaning toward an inability to
digest the protein in breast milk. This baby has had upper and lower GI,
intestinal biopsy, and numerous blood test. Her stool samples turned up no
leads even when she was so ill and hospitalized. CF has been ruled out by
biopsy. Her upper and lower intestines were both very inflamed, but
otherwise normal.
What do you think about inability to degest protein in human milk? The
baby did well on progestamil in the hospital, and now gets 3/4 nutramagen and
about 1/4 mother's milk. Mom reeeeeaaaallly wants to breastfeed, the
doctors are scratching their collective heads, and time is running out.
Also, this is the baby whose stool first became bloody three days after
her DTaP, and worsened one day after her second DTaP. Her physicians have
taken note of that, but don't know where to go with it. I have passed the
possible egg connection on to the mother.
Thanks in advance for sharing your insights.
