Evelyn has asked about the best choice of formula when a breastfed baby
needs to be supplemented and there is no mother's own milk or donor human milk
available. Since standard cow's milk based infant formula can significantly
change the baby's gut flora and sensitize the baby to allergies, asthma, and
diabetes in susceptible families, a hypoallergenic formula reduces the chances
that such an event would happen.

formulas--when, to whom and how long: after more than 15 years we know the right
indication! Allergy. 2004 Aug;59 Suppl 78:45-52.

While 10% of infants can still be allergic to this type of formula, its
potential for inducing many unwanted side effects seems to be much reduced.
