Aloha,

I talked to a mom today who is looking for help and info. She was happy that
I suggested I check with the collective.

This mom had surgery for inverted nipples in 1984. She told her doctor that
she wanted to breastfeed in the future, so he said he wouldn't cut too many
ducts. The nipple/ areola were not detached.

Mom just gave birth to a 6 lb 15 oz. baby. She felt she had "enough"
colostrum, things going well. On day three baby was down to 6 lbs. 5 oz.
Mom started supplementing with cup---about 1 oz formula. By day 5 baby had
gained 2 oz.

Mom can only express drops, even with a Lactina. She saw an L.C who felt she
couldn't breastfeed. Mom is engorged. Baby is sleepy and not nursing all
that well.
The ped. is very supportive and is telling mom to keep putting baby to the
breast.

Do you think the surgery has interfered with the mom being able to completely
breastfeed or could it be a case of baby just not nursing well. Mom did have
an epidural.

I gave mom suggestions for engorgement, also suggested keep putting baby to
breast, talked about latchon, positioning, good, active nursing, frequency of
nursing. I also mentioned that breastfeeding is more than nutrition, she
could continue even if she has to supplement.

Aloha,
