Dear Nikki,

We see this all the time in our practice. Our Asian moms love to pump and bottle and frequently suffer from plugged ducts. Like most breastfeeding difficulties, there is no magic bullet. I encourage them to do a warm soak (if able) or warm compresses for a few minutes, a good massage and firmly grasp the breast, lean over and give them a shake prior to pumping. Also make sure that the flanges are fitted properly to promote optimal milk removal. I also suggest that they increase their Vit C and E intake. The Vit C is for immunity uplift and E is to help w/improved circulation, tissue repair and in treating fibrocystic disease of the breast. I also recommend taking lecithin. Cell membranes are largely composed of lecithin, as well as the smooth muscles and nerve cells. Most moms that I work with find that by following the above care plan, their difficulties with plugged ducts are greatly improved.
