Yesterday Senator Tom Harkin introduced his comprehensive chronic disease
prevention legislation, the Healthy Lifestyles and Prevention (HeLP) America
Act of 2005. This is fairly wide-ranging legislation that encompasses a number
of policy areas. Included in the legislation are several breastfeeding
promotion initiatives that Sen Harkin's office discussed with a number of us
engaged in breastfeeding advocacy.
There is no bill number for the legislation yet, but I am happy to e-mail
anyone the sections pertaining to breastfeeding. The following sections are
relevant to breastfeeding promotion.
    * Section 105 – Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative
    * Section 216 – Task force for the promotion of breastfeeding in the
workplace
    * Section 217 – Lactation accommodation and breastfeeding promotion at
 work
    * Section 303 – Label and disclosure requirements for infant formulas
There is also a short descriptive document that describes the bill as well
as a more detailed section by section summary of the bill. This is very
exciting and a wonderful addition to the legislation recently filed by
Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney.
