Hi- this is my first post, although I've been lurking for months. I'm a LLLL,
and also a WIC breastfeeding counselor in MD. I'm wondering about alcohol use
in nursing moms. The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding says an occasional drink or
two Isn't known to hurt, and this concurs with other information I've found.
However, lately I've been questioned (by moms and nursing friends) about the
amount of alcohol that is safe. These moms want to know if 3-6 drinks would
cause a significant problem with their babies. This is not meant to be
everyday, and we are assuming that if they were too drunk to take care of
their baby, they couldn't nurse anyway! I think the thought is that if you've
had 2 glasses of wine, and later want one more, what possible effects could
this have?? I have to say I'm curious about this personally, as I have a 6
month old, and have been known to enjoy a beer or two. Are we concerned more
with the loss of parenting skills involved with alcohol use, or the actual
alcohol itself? Thanks in advance.
P.S. I have to wince at the references to the blue bulb syringe, as my
daughter is getting over bronchiolitis, and this was the only aspirator that
would declog her nose enough to nurse.
