If you check out the literature there is actually a huge controversy about
early nutrition and asthma....almost out and out brawls in a couple of
journals and the head naysayers re breastfeeding being protective are from
NZ. However, the big NZ study involved routine bottle a day of formula in
the "breastfed" category, certainly not exclusive. If you look for Wendy
Oddy's work you will find research (from Aus) that contradicts this
research.

Subject: hypoallergenic formula references

Hello,
I am in the process of trying to get the staff at our hospital to shift
from giving standard formula in the event of a medical indication to using
hypoallergenic formula. We do not currently have a milk bank so human milk
is not an option for supplementation if the mother has not produced an
adequate supply and the baby needs supplementing . I have used "Just one
Bottle" by Marsha Walker and all of its associated references as my basis
for this as well as comments from Nancy Wight during her lecture tour here
this year.
I have to do this in baby steps and at the moment I am trying to convince
the doctors to screen for a family history of Atopic disease which to my
understanding includes eczema and asthma. I have our head paediatrician
sold on the family history of Eczema as well as on the Type II diabetes as
reasons to use this but he is not convinced about the Asthma. Does anyone
have any wonderful references I can use to debate this with him before I go
to speak with him. Preferably RCT's. He apparently has some studies that
prove that there is no effect. Could you please email me separately as I
am not currently getting my Lactnet daily.
Thanks in advance.
Cheers,
Mandi Porta, RN, BSN
