I was asked on Facebook today by a La Leche League Leader in my area if I knew anything about hyperthyroidism and low milk supply. A mom in her League group who has been diagnosed with hyperthyroidism and has thyroid nodules. We know how to get the information on tests, etc. What the mother needs to know is if the hyperthyroidism could be causing a severely low milk supply. This is a second baby, who is three weeks old. First baby mom was able to breastfeed fully, but had to nurse or pump every hour to produce enough. This baby she is only able to pump drops. She is pumping around the clock and putting the baby to the breast, but baby is pretty much formula feeding. She saw a doctor who started her on domperidone a few days ago, but has not seen results yet. I have not met this mom. I suspect she may have insufficient glandular tissue or some other hormonal issues. Sorry, I don’t know the whole background story. Any ideas?
