This sounds a little like how the Incas were reported to feed their babies. It was very important for them that the Incas would not be 'soft'. In order to prevent this, the mothers leaned over a cradle and draped a boob over the baby. There was no contact other than the boob in the mouth.

I can't imagine how my back would have coped with that. 

I read this in an eyewitness account from, I think it was a Spanish priest who was with the early conquistadores I guess.
