Its been a looonnnggg time since I have posted to the list. Been going thru
some personal struggles and have been so bogged down with the "junk" that I
have not even had time to read the archives. I am glad to be back.

Dear Molly,

I work at a small hospital and hear the same thing about supplementation as
you do. However, I have not heard about the "enzyme" before. As you do, I
explain that Dr. Newman reasoning is baby's are not breastfeeding, the same
as you. I would not think that a bili of 15 at day 4 is unreasonable unless
their was ABO incompatability, I take it from you that their was/is not. These
babies seem to be thriving! You are doing a great job. I do remember reading
in J. Newmans book that since most baby's have some jaundice then there
must be a reason and he goes on to explain that their is evidence that low
lying levels of bilirubin actually have a antioxidant effect on babies. Throw
that one out there...They will probably call you crazy. :)

I guess I don't have an answer to the enzyme question however the Peds try
to tell me that formula helps flush it out also. So, I'm here to tell you I think
you are doing the right thing about giving them the protocol on
supplementation. Don't bang your head against the wall too hard.

Best to you,
robin
