I usually have them wean gradually by SNSing at every other feed then, if that
goes well dropping to two or three supps. per day and then no more SNS. Mom goes
to pumping only at the feeds where she SNSs.

With this kind of plan, moms can usually go from full SNS feeds to no SNS feeds
in less than a week and they don't have to risk putting baby or milk supply in
jeopardy. If at any time, baby seems to not be thriving...it is possible to go
back.

Thriving does not, however, mean that baby's fussiness should be rewarded with
SNS. Some babies will fuss about the absence of the SNS initially. For them, the
issues are different and need to be addressed slightly differently. If a baby
fusses at the breast without the SNS I take a different tact and have mom give a
small amount via SNS to get things started. When its empty its empty. Gradually
decrease the amount in the SNS until it is so small as to be
insignificant...then D/C.

Hope this helps.
