I saw a patient today who has an 8 wk old infant. She started with a
plugged duct on the areola where the nipple ends. It seemed to clear up.
Became painful again and she couldn't get the baby to nurse on that
side. Started pumping, getting very little milk. Saw the physician and
went on antibiotics. This then turned into an abcess She was on
antibiotics. An I & D was performed today. She has a packing in the
incision and the physician expects drainage up to one week. She can't
pump. Packing comes out in two days. She will then have an open
incision at the base of the nipple. She can't nurse on that side.
Pumping will also be very uncomfortable because of the location of the
incision. I am at a loss as to tell her what to do. She is feeding on
the unaffected side right now. Any suggestions? TIA
