Three years ago I was the sole LC for a hospital that delivered approximately
2000. After trying to be everything to everyone and with much effort to
change the practices, attitudes and issues I suffered burn out. I did the
job well and put way too much of my own time into it. In retrospect I was a
bit depressed and overwhelmed by the demands of the position as any hospital
LC will attest to. I left the position with ambivalent feelings. I was
relieved and yet sad since I loved the actual work with the mothers and felt
success with them one on one. It hjas been 3 years and since then. The
position has now been vacant for about 8 months and the program is suffering.
Three of us on staff who are IBCLC are job sharing now to give 5 day a week
coverage. I will work 1 day as the LC and 2 as L&D staff. If any one has job
shared an LC position and has advice on communication between eachother and
how they made the situation work well I would love to hear your suggestions.
I do feel there will be less burn out now that we will have built in
commraderie and support. But I want to help us work cohesively as well.
TIA
