About the hip (sic) pediatrician Michael Cohen's book: I've always been
skeptical about books where the solution to such complex things as sleep is
a simple three step process, where you 'just' follow the instructions and
voilą!
But besides being grossly oversimplified, the advice Heather Kelly quoted
for how to get a full night's sleep with a four month old baby in the house
is appalling. (Note I am not calling it how to get the baby to sleep - he
doesn't address that at all, only how the adult should get to sleep by
abandoning an infant.) Even though it was written before the publication
of the latest study on causes of SIDS, there has been a suspicion for
several years that sleeping in a room by herself is a risk factor for
SIDS. A very few of the parents following this advice will return at 7
a.m. to find a dead baby in the crib, and that baby might have lived had
not the book discouraged them from getting real help for breastfeeding
problems, and finding research evidence-based information on the normal
safe sleep habits of young humans.
This guy would definitely not be my idea of a hip pediatrician. Since when
is it hip to ignore the needs of one's child? There is nothing new about
his spoutings; we've seen all this before in slightly different packaging
(I am thinking Ezzos now, and Truby King, and all of their ilk).
I shudder at the thought of being cared for in my old age by someone whose
idea of compassion and empathy was fostered by being raised according to
such a book as this.
