Tamara and all, the first thing I thought when I read your post was, "What
brought that on?!"  As someone else wrote, gong to the individual directly
would be appropriate.  I also recognize that sometimes mothers hear things
we do not say, or at least not in the way we say them.
The other thought I had was to be concerned about your training, not in a
"you're not competent way," in a "What the heck?!" way.  Those messages
about not trusting people were not part of my training.  I may have had
experience with specific practitioners that led me to feel uncomfortable
with their breastfeeding advice; this was not a generalized experience,
however.

In terms of the ethics of the IBCLC practice, I refer you to the ILCA or
IBLCE website.  I am surprised that this, too, was not part of your
training.
