Dear fellow lactnetters:

I work as a Clinical Nurse Specialist in level 3 hospital; I have a burning
question to ask the group. A renal patient on chronic ambulatory perintoneal
dialysis is pregnant @ 28 weeks. As her pregnancy progresses, she increases
her dialysis to almost 20 hours a day on a cycler. She's wondering about
breastfeeding. Reports from the literature is scarce since there are
relatively few pregnancies in patients with end stage renal disease and
CAPD. I know from Lawrence's book that there are small amt of urea and
creatinine in breastmilk. However her BUN runs around 17 mmol (48 mg/dl)and
serum creatinine in the 600's umol (6.8 mg/dl). Do these values reflect
similar concencentrations in the breast milk and if so, is it safe for baby
to breastfeed??? TIA
