I'm trying to find references that discuss thrush affecting baby's suck:
clicking or smacking sounds, difficult latch, noisy nursing. I looked at all
the archives. All of my favorite references are not available to me today. I
know it is discussed frequently on lactnet, but how do we know thrush causes
this?

The baby in question is 5 weeks old-just started exclusive breastfeeding at 4
weeks. Mom had so much difficulty in the beginning she had been pumping and
bottlefeeding EBM. Baby has never had visible thrush or diaper rash but mom
had all the symptoms of burning nipples, shooting pains in the breasts-mom is
treating herself with a cream and baby with Nystatin. At 4 weeks, I observed
a feeding (helping mom with painful latch). With a good latch, feeding was
quiet, normal, rhythmic, one swallow with every quiet suck, no pain for mom.
On the breast, now he loses contact with the breast with each suck and makes
a loud smacking noise. I saw him do this with 2 different types of bottle
nipples also!

A nurse-practitioner who evaluated baby referred mom to a specialist for
sucking problems (OT, I think) and she doesn't want to go-not necessary.
Something has caused this change in sucking. There has been no trauma to baby
or illness since birth (trying to think of whatever else could enter in
here). The NP did put mom on Diflucan but she doesn't think thrush and
sucking problems are related. The NP is a LLL leader and has become a friend.

This is the same mom I posted about on Oct 5 about the nipples turning purple
during pumping and staying purple for quite awhile. Pump company tells her
nipple yeast makes them turn cyanotic while pumping. I can't find this
reference either.

There have been only a handful of posts (in all) since my post Oct. 5. I've
never seen such slow lactnet days. I even subscribed Lactnet again thinking
somehow I took myself off but I was still on. I guess all 1610 people except
the 2 who graciously responded privately are on vacation. I really need some
information here, please.
