horror stories about birth and breastfeeding beginnings.
I encourage women to write to hospitals and complain
but I don't think many do. But I also hear good stories
and I know some mothers write and thank the staff."

I won't go into my story. Suffice it to say that it was very negative & I felt very violated & angry. (Still do, though it's been 6 years and the anger is no longer as intense.)

This is where I wanted to chime in: I did write a letter to the hospital's ombudsman. Their response was more or less, "we regret that *you feel* that you had poor service". There was no closure. If anything, their response just rubbed those negative emotions in even deeper. They followed protocol. They didn't care that I didn't like the outcome. End of story, as far as they were concerned.

Until a multitude of mothers become very vocal...? I can't see anything changing.
