The mother was not clear on his current length. The pediatrician told her to start giving him water and to space out feedings to a minimum of four hours between feedings. She told her that her baby would be developing too many fat cells and maybe the fat content of her milk was too high. The pediatrician claimed she had never heard of a breasfed baby that had gained so much weight.

I have two friends whose babies followed a similar pattern, both about 8 lbs at birth, both over 23 lbs at 3 months, both exclusively breastfed. Baby A nursed every 2 hrs or so around the clock. Baby B only nursed for 5 mins every 4-5 hours and her mother went to the ped asking if her baby could possible be getting enough milk. Doc took one look at Baby B and told her to cut out the solids. Of course she wasn't getting any solids, so doc said to nurse less...and then told the mother to drink more water to *dilute the milk.*
Oh yeahhhhhhh........THAT makes sense!

Both these babies continued to breastfeed exclusively for more than 6 months, adding solids at their own pace, and continuing to nurse until they were almost 4 yearsold. Their growth slowed down over the rest of their first year as they grew taller but not fatter. Both grew into well proportioned adults, and now Baby B is nursing her own baby :)

FWIW, norma
