inverted nipples. The mother grasps the tissue behind the nipple, pulls out

that is close to my understanding, which is: The Hoffman technique purports
to bring the nipple out to an erect and projected position. The thumbs or
forefingers are placed on oppposite sides of the areola and close to the
inverted nipple. While firmly pressing into the tissue, tension is applied in
opposing directions as the fingers are pulled away from the nipple and toward
the areolar margin on either side. Hoffman suggested that after the nipple
has been everted and is easier to grasp, the nipple should be held at it’s
base and teased out a bit further[Hoffman 1953].
