According to the information I have which my pharmacist husband scouted
out for me yesterday, there have been isolated reports of adverse effects in
breastfed infants whose mothers were receiving methergine for several days:
elevated BP, bradycardia, tachycardia, vomiting, diarrhea, restlessness
or clonic cramps. Another baby presented with seizures. However, they
point out that although symptoms ceased when the medication was stopped, it is
not possible to determine the causality of any of the adverse effects with
the info available.

It can, as has been noted, decrease serum prolactin levels.

Bottom line -- only use this drug if absolutely necessary in breastfeeding
mothers.
