I just wanted to do a little venting and see if I am way off base or are others
feeling the same.
Our Obstetrical unit has been under renavation so we are trying to work in a
limited area. Normally have about 500 babies a year. We have been seeing an
increase since our renavation like 50-60 per month instead of 45. We need to
send patients to a surgical unit with their babies if we are too full. I work as
an LC assessing moms and babies, educating staff and patients. assisting all
new moms throughout their stay as well as follow up.
I felt like we came along way from separating moms and their babies to initial
skin to skin care right after birth until breastfeeding had begun. Most of the
staff have been cooperating. But this is the week that is driving me nuts.
Staff are giving complimentary feedings so moms can sleep. Not 5 to 10ml but
30-35ml. Moms are worried their baby won't feed because for me they are in a
dead sleep from so much formula or barfing it all up. The moms and staff look
at me to fix it all in five minutes so mom can go home and move the next one
in.
I guess I'm asking is this the way it's going to be. Formula is so ready and free
for so many because of WIC. We lost our peer counselor in January so now we
just have the Wic nurses trying to fill the gap. My nerves are fraying as well
since I'm studying for the IBCLC this year as well.
Since it has been so busy I've had to take assignments of patients as well as
carrying on my usual duties because I don't want any moms to go without
help.
