We are having lots of mom's test positive for illicit drug use (everything from meth to cocaine) in the past several months. Everyone seems to have a different idea about how things should be handled. Most drugs are listed as L5's in Medications and Mothers Milk but the pediatricians want guidelines
as to how long mom can pump and dump and resume breastfeeding. And if we have them pump and dump for a certain period of time, who's responsibility is it to make sure the mom remains clean?
Is anyone aware of any current standards on how to guide practice when mom tests positive on arrival to L&D for illicit drug use and how to manage breastfeeding (or not breastfeeding) while they are in the hospital and
following discharge? Thanks so much for your help!
