Dear Friends:
Denise poses a question about giving Vitamin K to the mother so more will
get to the baby via breastfeeding.
I have a text from 1975: Pediatrics 2nd Ed, by Mohsen Ziai MD and other
MDs. The authors recommend giving Vit K IM to moms to boost levels in their
milk.
There is also something very, very interesting in this book. On page 56,
there is a mention of "clinical incidents " resulting from overdosing babies
with water-soluable derivatives of Vit. K. " Hemolytic anemia, icterus, and
kernicterus were the most salient symptoms observed." Again on page 835, "
The drug-induced hemolytic anemias of the neonatal period are best
exemplified by the administration of excessive amounts of vitamin K, either
to the mother during labor or to the newly born infant."
Makes me wonder if some jaundice can result in susceptible babies (ex:
those born by pitocin prodding, those with bruising from birth) potentiated
by Vit. K administration.
