After reading Alicia Dermer's most recent message, I am wondering if
another option for the mother with unknonw (but probably very low risk)
would be for her to pump her milk and pasteurize it. We KNOW that HIV is
killed by heat. That would mean a bit more work for her, but her baby could
still get her milk and the small loss of certain elements (due to heat
treatment) seems a small price to pay for milk that is now free of the
(theoretical) risk of HIV transmission.

Alicia: your comments on this would be helpful. Next querstion, too, is
how to get the information to the mother. And, is there a milk bank near
her?

If not, I recommend taht she be put in touch with Lois Arnold, the
Executive Director of theHuman Milk Banking Association of North America.

The LC working with the mother in question should contact me directly for
Lois' phone number. (I have not asked her if I can post it on LACTNET.)
