My son "failed" his hearing test, and when I followed up with an office
visit to an audiologist, he was annoyed at the whole situation, because
newborn ear canals do not respond well or accurately to the particular
test--it is just done because it can be lumped into the hospital bill
and catches people who don't do well baby checks. It does bring him a
bit more business, because moms with insurance will follow up the
"failure." He said part of the problem is that you can't do it right
after a feed, because of fluid or something, and of course a breastfed
nb in hospital should ideally be feeding practically all of the time.
The more sensitive office test can be done while nursing.

I am surprised that doing it with a pacifier even works, if it is the
same device. Can the baby suck on moms finger instead?
