Personal experience.

I dealt with this while my third was in the NICU. They had him on a 4 hour
feeding schedule, at the breast or with expressed breastmilk if I was not there.

After about 10 days, he was not gaining very well and was having a lot of
issues maintaining his temp. He was born at 34 weeks and was 4 lbs 5 ounces
by then.

I went in, with my sling and wore him skin to skin all day. I nursed him
whenever he acted hungry which just so happened to be every hour, on the
hour. This was very much against the nurses wishes. They said that he
would burn too much energy (he also had a cleft) and would just loose
weight. Well, he ended up gaining a bunch and came home 3 days later. :)
