Hi Diane,

I run one of the milk banks in the UK. All our milk is cultured, so we
do lots of tests each week, and it always grow stuff. I have never had a
sterile result. The milk is from mothers with term, healthy babies.
The interesting thing is that all the babies, from the donating mothers,
are well.
We also have milk from mothers who have left milk behind after the baby
is discharged, fully breastfed, from NICU. These babies have been very
premature and sick. This milk often contains bacteria which is
potentially pathogenic, yet the babies are all fine. We do not use this
milk, but I wonder if we are being too cautious. A lot more research
needs doing into this.
