Ann, thank you for your clarification. I, too, see parents who are afraid
to even hold their babies against their chest, for fear that they will die.

The gastrointerologists that I talk to say that babies (or anyone) lying on
their sides, particularly the left side allows gas to be relieved with
ease.  Adults with reflux are advised to lie down on their left side for 15
minutes or so whenever an attack is coming on and it often prevents the
serious pain of reflux. People say that the relief, if caught quickly
enough, is amazingly complete.
