Barbara,

Your post about deep breast pain and one long episode of mastits was really
interesting. I've been getting some phone calls from patients that are in
similar situations. What you recommend for gentle cleansing of broken down
nipples?

We've been focusing hard on prevention and things are way better than they
were a few years ago, but we still see one or two moms a week who are
scabbed or cracked within a few hours of giving birth! My partner and I
are doing a mandatory inservice this month for all RN's. We are hoping
that by giving the labor and delivery staff more education, we can prevent
some of those situations where the mom feeds once and is already broken
down. Can anyone offer any suggestions for pearls of wisdom to pass along
to them? Short and simple is usually better received.

I'm proud to say that most of our babies are skin to skin in the first 30
min. now, even our C-sections!

Thanks in advance,

Barb Fibich, RN, IBCLC
