Don't ya just love it when someone researches and proves what we know from
experience? Mammals. WE are mammals. I have heard that and now use it all
the time. I often say "Make believe we are living before 3 bedroom 2 bath
homes and a baby nursery. What would you be doing right now?" Or, "You are
an adult mammal and your biology has been influeced by our culture, but your
baby is a newborn mammal and culture has not tampered with him/her yet.
Babies expect biology, try to honor that for a while before you introduce
the harsh realities of our culture." Most parents respond very well to
understanding that babies are not born understanding cultural expectations.
We do so much to interfere with the baby's expectations and skin to skin and
lying down helps bring some of it back to them. I am glad to see it
supported by research.

Also...think about the current latching methods we use....more chest
touching, more skin closeness...chin touching first, no more tap the bottom
lip, wait for an open mouth, and shove 'em on. Now the baby is so close,
and searching and reaching...much more like what they likely expect to do.

Best,
