Dear Wise-ones!
I saw a 5-day old baby today with craniostenosis (not all sutures closed -
for surgery at about 6 weeks). Neurologically baby is fine.
The reason for the visit was nipple trauma. Baby roots and latches
eagerly, but tongue is flat and not over gum line. Palate and tongue are
otherwise normal. Mother has been pumping and finger feeding baby - as
suggested by physiotherapist who provided laser therapy for her damaged
nipples. Mother had an epidural during labour and baby was born by vacuum
extraction.
Milk supply is also low thanks to *kind* staff cup feeding the baby formula
at night and ineffective latch.
***My question is, could craniostenosis be linked to the sucking problems?
My feeling is that it is more likely the type of birth and too much "help"
in hospital, but would like to hear from anyone who has experience with
these babies.
Many thanks.
