I read on the list a few days ago that someone mentioned comfort measures
for reflux (I deleted this by mistake) I have a baby in my care at the moment
who has been diagnosed as having reflux by the German peads. They are
suggesting a range of different gels etc. and I would be really grateful if
someone
could let me know if they have any other methods that have worked with thier
babies.
my 1st had severe reflux and the ped wanted to put him on medications as well
as have me feed him cereal mixed w/ formula and/or breastmilk to create a
thickened mixture he could keep down. he was preemie, born at 35 wks and would
regurgitate vast amounts after each nursing.
i refused the meds as he seemed healthy and happy and gained fairly well
despite the constant horking.
some of the things i did were to (of course) nurse him more than constantly,
carry him in a sling with head elevated frequently, never lie him flat and use
the colic hold any time he seemed fussy. i also did a lot of infant massage
and took him to a pediatric chiropractor.
after nursing, i would prop him up in lounging position for about 40 mins to
help prevent the milk flowing right back out or just hold him on my shoulder
that long over a towel, he slept curled inside a boppy on his side, never lying
flat - esp never on his back.
we never did use medication or any other measures and the reflux lasted until
about 9 mos, getting a little better each month.
i recently smelled a ff'ed baby's spitup and can't even imagine keeping my
own cookies down had my house been constantly doused in that hellish odor as it
was w/ the breastmilk spitup!
