Pat this so much reminds me of my early nursing days with my son. I
blamed it on a number of issues, the first and still most annoying was the
introduction of a bottle by a NICU nurse on day 3 because of jaundice
(which was 16 for 4 weeks) - against my wishes. Once the milk was in he
was unable to latch (I sure wish we knew about reverse pressure then-I
tried pumping with a LLoyd-B) because of a moderately attached frenulum
and my perky nipples that invert on compression. He also was on an apnea
monitor and aminophyllin 3 times a day to keep him breathing. It would
take him from 10 to 90 minutes to latch and I tried every position and
then some to get him on and he finished in 10-15 minutes. Despite all
this he never lost an ounce and in fact gained phenominally from my
abundant supply. And my mother-in-law said I would never be able to nurse
with my nearly A cup! At seven weeks he latched on immediately and never
had another problem BF. It was frustrating, I wish my 2 year old hadn't
weaned when I was 20 weeks that may have helped but he finally figured it
out. I suggest Mom be patient, use relaxation techniques and be creative.
I'm assuming you assessed the oral-breast compatability? Support milk
supply and possibly use a nipple shield, I wish I had.
