Some months ago sucking on something sweet was reported to help preterm
infants handle painful procedures. I believe from Lactnet posts that a
whole new industry started after this was reported ... ie in selling
hospitals sweetened pacifiers.
In an article published in the current Pediatrics researchers in Canada
have found giving sweetened fluids to be detrimental.
http://www.pediatrics.org/cgi/content/abstract/110/3/523

Conclusion as published in the abstract:
Conclusions. Repeated use of sucrose analgesia in infants <31 weeks' PCA
may put infants at risk for poorer neurobehavioral development and
physiologic outcomes. Additional study is needed to determine the most
appropriate age and duration of sucrose analgesia in preterm infants.
