On the bright side, Pat. I worked with a mom last week who is
breastfeeding her second. Had chronic yeast problems with the first but
managed to feed him for 19 months! Now, with the second...same set of
yeast problems. I took her your yeast page (thanks from me and her!) She
said "If doctor so and so won't help we'll get Dr. so and so.

I think there is a time when moms need to stand up to the bulls---. I am
now taking copies of Peggy O'Mara's editorial about using the MD as a
consultant (current "Mothering") to thoose who don't get this. People do
hire their doctors...and can just as well fire them.

There will be many who disagree with me on this but..... I've seen even
young first time moms say "no thanks doc." Just this week I heard a
pediatrician at the nurses station telling how he had "straightened out
the mom in room so and so about letting that baby nurse all night." I
ran in to do damage control annd guess what? She was in bed with baby at
breast. She said, a doctor was just in here who said I shouldn't do this
but I told him "I took breastfeeding classes, my baby has had five wet
and three poopy diapers overnight, and I'll do it if I like." I hugged
her!

I wish all care providers would educate themselves....but they are only
half of the equation. If mom fails to educate herself she is
contributing to her own problems.

Susan
