At mom's age, she's probably getting grey hair. It's not at all unusual 
for grey hairs to have a different cross-sectional shape, and therefore 
curl, than one's original hair. My grey hairs are much straighter than 
my brown hair, and when I reach a critical mass of grey hairs in any one 
bunch, there's a noticeable difference.

I've not had clients report changes in hair curliness due to lactation.
