Hello all!
First, I'd like to thank Jill M. who commented on questions to ask WIC
patients prenatally-ditto, ditto, ditto! I agree women should be asked
"What do you know about bf?" or "What questions do you have about bf?" I,
too, find that it doesn't work to ask if they will bf or bottlefeed. Again,
it's a matter of being cognizant of our language and how we phrase these
questions-our goal is to educate and to propose bf as the normal/expected
way of feeding. We meet with every WIC patient prenatally-it is mandatory
that they see us just like it is for them to meet with the WIC nutritionist.
I, too, give them my home phone number because questions and concerns
usually do not occur only between the 8:30-4:00 work day.

My favorite book is WHY I SHOULD NURSE MY BABY by Pamela K. Wiggins,IBCLC.
Yes, it is an excellent book for low level readers BUT it is also GREAT for
EVERYONE. When I had my first baby, I didn't have a great network for
support and it was a quick and wonderful to the point source of information.
My Mother,a BSN,MSN and I recommend it in our hospital Lamaze classes
because we find the general public isn't always interested in reading a big
thick medical journal when they want information. This book is very user
friendly. We use it in the Health Department for our patients. I know alot
of hospitals give it out in discharge packets to their breastfeeders. I was
given this book as a baby gift! We have had super success with it prenatally
in the health department and it serves as another source of support and
guidance after the baby is born. Also, the author has another book coming
out really soon entitled,BF:A MOTHER'S GIFT. This book offers up-to-date
research and an extensive list of advantages that is referenced,(super for
Lamaze classes).
