Hi, Jan and Cynthia: I'll definitely have to read the article you refer
to, Jan. My daughter Rachel (I have shamelessly bragged about her
doctorate in Occupational Therapy) is in the process of getting the seminar
hours she needs for her EI (Early Intervention)certification. She attended
a seminar on infant/young child feeding. The speaker was a pediatrician
from Loyola University Chicago whose special interest/expertise is failure
to thrive. I looked over her powerpoint presentation/handouts. Most of
the information was basic. Rachel said that I would have enjoyed her
presentation, as Rachel feels this doctor and I think alike when it comes
to feeding - it should be baby/child-led, rather than feeder-led. The
speaker commented during her presentation that she thought about sitting
the IBLCE exam but decided not to because she did not agree with
the "lactation attitude" she has encountered in her interaction with LCs.
She apparently feels there is too much "interference" in the feeding
process by the LC. Too many LCs are overhelping the mom/baby to the point
of actually causing more harm than help.
Maybe we need to examine our own practices. Are we as LCs also
contributing to the negative birth/nursing emotions that mothers experience?
Made me stop and think.
