Paula, I have seen such information in Riordan's book, probably also the
Breastfeeding Answer Book. What has been discussed on Lactnet previously is
that most NICUs go by the storage guidelines of the Milk Banking Association
of North America which is 48 hours storage in a refrigerator for fresh human
milk, and 3 months for frozen, 24 hours for thawed (I think). Most hospitals
here tell moms to freeze their milk in case mom can't get the milk to the
hospital quickly enough for it to be used within the 48 hours. The complete
guidelines can be accessed from the MBANA. My two cents is that the wording
on the letter needs to be changed to be more positive and could cite the
guideline of the MBANA.
