Greetings,
Sunday night I was watching Lifetime's Strong Medicine (a medical drama
here in U.S.). The mother in the show had adopted a baby from Russia, baby
became ill with TB. The woman Dr came into the room and saw the mom
bottlefeeding, Dr stated something like this, "You could breastfeed your
baby, it would be great for his immune system", Mom replied, "how?", Dr
replied, "well, there is a drug, Domperidone, which has a side effect of
producing milk, would you like me to write a prescription?" Mom agreed.
Later in program Mom is shown breastfeeding her baby, and the Dr. remarks,
"well, I see the medicine worked".
This was so refreshing after they had portrayed Lactation Consultants in
a not so positive role last season. I have written to compliment them. If
anyone else wishes to, go to www.lifetimetv.com
Now if I could just get the Drs around here to be so quick to encourage a
mom to breastfeed and to write the prescription for Domperidone!
Warmly, Judith Markham IBCLC
