I'd recommend getting the child onto Acidophilus sprinkles which you can purchase from a health foods store. Your child's immune system sounds compromised by the cold symptoms. Any reason for a depleted immunity is when thrush can occur.

My Dad recently had heart surgery and had respiratory treatments in the form of nebulizers which altered his immune status. The doctors prescribed Nystatin lollipops for him for a duration of 3 days and told him he was cured. But, he still had symptoms of "cotton mouth", so I told my mom to get him acidophilus. He's still on it to keep himself protected since his body has been under stress and he's prone to yeast as a result.
