Lactnet friends-

Does anyone have evidence based information concerning the use of breast milk for a 27 weeker from a mom with diagnosed strep A throat infection?

I was off today so the unit called infection disease department and they said not to use the milk dated 48 hours before being placed on antibiotics and not to resume until mom is on antibiotics for 24 hours.

I have told the nurses that breastfeeding during illnesses like this is important because of maternal antibodies production in response to infection. I tell them that mom is making special medication to help with the exposure the baby has already had from mom. Every one is scratching their head with this recommendation especially me. The ID department told the doctor that using the milk would only be appropriate if the baby was term. Again my instinct tells me that the compromised baby needed the protection more than a term. I feel the onus is on me to have a credible source as to why this is not accurate... or maybe it is accurate and I have been misinformed.

Any research come to the top of anyone's mind.? I couldn't find any thing in my resources that I could use to counter this suggestion.

Thanks for any help with this topic anyone may have.
