Jeanne: I thought near-term is defined as 34 to completion of 36th week of
gestation. Premature below 34 weeks and micro-preemie or VLBW below 29
weeks. Term I have always heard defined as 37-42 weeks gestation. Do I
need to change my thinking?
I will be inservicing our staff next month on "Care of the Near-term Infant"
including a comprehensive (I hope) section on breastfeeding. Many of these
babies are now out on the unit with mom, which is where they should be, if
medically stable. It's too bad a lot of the staff still doesn't understand the
huge benefit of frequent skin-to-skin with these babies.
