I fully agree that we need to give an honest day's work not just in
terms of honestly working the time we get paid for, but NOT giving
time for which we aren't paid. This is like buying supplies for an
organization and not submitting a bill as a "donation". The next
person who has that job/assignment may not be in a position to
donate goods or give extra time. Then it looks like that subsequent
person is a "slacker" if they don't accomplish as much as the one
who put in extra non-paid time. We need to keep careful
documentation of outpatients we could not see or inpatients we
couldn't help as well as consults we referred to outside LCs. Also,
when not able to meet a mom's needs due to time constraints,
encourage that mom to write to the higher-ups expressing
disappointment that there was not time for her needs to be met.
(This can backfire and get blamed on you, so have the documentation
of why that mom was "shortchanged" well in hand.)

Another concern with handling phone calls at home: HIPPA again! We
had suggested we could do some phone calls from home and keep track
of the time involved to put on our time cards. We were told that
this would be a concern because we would have patient information
written down at home and in transit when taking it back to work to
record and this would be a violation! (I'm a little tired of being
up to our hips in HIPPA!)

Winnie
