Terri,
I think I would ask mother if she would be willing to try a nursing
supplementer (lactation aid) at breast, with a nipple shield if necessary.
Baby may not go eagerly to breast, and mom may have to spend the first week
with as much STS and kangaroo care as possible. During the time, if any,
that baby is not latching to breast, she should also express quite
regularly. Since she is getting virtually no milk now, perhaps she could be
put on reglan or an herbal preparation.
I think the process will take several weeks, but is definitely possible and
do-able if mother has support and help with other children and household
duties.
Based on this history and mother not bf last 2 babies, it is a high risk
situation for premature weaning, unfortunately.
